Setting the Default Map Camera View

Learn how to set the default angle and rotation your map camera view is set to.

Written by Chris

Customizing your default map camera allows you to control the exact angle and rotation visitors see when they first load and explore your map. This ensures you are presenting a polished map experience right from the start.

Here is a step-by-step guide to configuring your map’s camera settings in the Circuit CMS.

Accessing the Default Map Camera Settings

  • In the Maps section, select Configuration.

  • Scroll down to the Default Map Camera section.

Adjusting Bearing and Pitch

The map camera will adjust based on two main settings: Default bearing (the rotation of the map, where 0 degrees equals true North) and Default pitch (the tilt of the map, where 0 degrees is a flat, top-down view).

If these are not changed (both are left empty), the map will be set to true North (0 degrees) at a 60-degree tilt.

You can adjust these values using three different methods:

  • Visual Dragging: Right-click and drag your mouse on the preview map to visually tilt and rotate the camera to your preferred angle. You can also left-click and drag to pan across the map.

  • Manual Entry: For precise control, type your specific degree values directly into the text fields beneath the map. Clear the values to restore the default position.

  • Topdown Reset: Click the compass icon on the map's control panel to instantly snap the view to a top-down 0,0 view.

Note on Zooming: While you can zoom in and out on the preview map to see what you are doing, the zoom level is not saved as part of your default camera. Your live map's zoom is automatically calculated based on the geographical boundaries of your mapped content.

Where These Settings Apply

Once you save your changes, your new camera configuration will change the angle and rotation of your front-end map:

  • Map Load: This is the angle and rotation visitors will see the moment the map page loads.

  • Places Tab: When a visitor clicks through the Places tab (selecting a specific project, building, or group), the map will pan to that location at the saved default camera view.

Users will still be able to self-explore and adjust the rotation and tilt of the map on their own. The map will go back to the saved rotation and tilt when a new place is loaded.
