What is OSM?
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative, open-source mapping platform that allows individuals and organizations to create and share detailed geographic data. Instead of using traditional map sources, communities can contribute information about streets, buildings, parks, and any other places they know.
OSM is constantly updated by a global community of mappers. That means that the map data is often more up-to-date and detailed compared to proprietary maps.
OSM data can be customized, giving us the ability to show and hide map features or even change the map style.
Throughout the Maps Onboarding process, the Circuit team will review current OSM data for your location, as well as work to update and refine that data prior to launch. This is why sharing current mapping resources with accurate data is so critical.
What type of information are we looking for?
We may ask you about recent changes and additions to the location, like recently added roads, structures, or name changes, so we can check whether theyโre represented in the map data or need to be added to OSM. For an accurate representation of buildings, we may ask for more detailed information such as building heights or number of floors.
How will this information be used?
Combined with other trust-worthy sources like your 360s and multimedia, first-hand observations, and OSM partner sources like Bing satellite imagery, we can confidently improve the OSM data representing your locations. Edits are contributed directly to the OSM database under their open-source license, and in this way, we improve map experiences in your Circuit Virtual Tour as well as anywhere else OSM maps are used.
