What is a self-guided tour?

Simply put, a self-guided tour is a resource that allows visitors to explore a location on their own terms. With self-guided tours, you’re able to deliver an enhanced visitor experience while further enabling independent exploration and discovery.

Why use a self-guided tour?

Self-guided tours can be used to enhance the visit experience and are a beneficial option for your visitors. With self-guided tours you'll:

  • Empower guests with the flexibility to explore at their own pace, choose their starting point, and customize the tour to their interests.

  • Foster a more personalized and immersive journey, especially for those busy, independent, or stealth visitors.

  • Provide an engaging alternative experience to visitors who may have already taken an in-person tour.

As an example, standard tours may not be flexible to customize a tour to suit each visitor’s specific needs or interests. Having self-guided tours, however, offers an immersive tailor-made solution allowing individuals to focus on specific stops or areas that resonate with them.

In another example, visitors may arrive at a visitor center without prior notice or outside regular hours; self-guided tours provide a means to augment your capacity, ensuring an exceptional on-site tour experience around the clock!

How do self-guided tours work?

Self-guided tours work very similarly to your typical virtual tour, although this time, it is an on-site experience!

Upon starting a self-guided tour your visitors are provided with everything they need to know about the tour, including the number of stops, total tour time, and distance. Visitors can then decide to proceed or opt to view the tour virtually.

Visitors will need to enable their location and then will be shown a full tour route. At this point visitors will be shown the closest starting point, however, they can also select where they wish to start and stop their tour. Throughout your visitor’s experience they will be able to see their tour route, scenes they have visited, as well as their current location on the route.

With self-guided tours, visitors can use their device to pan around a 360, open scenes and hotspots, and switch from top-down or 3D view modes. This provides visitors with a better understanding of the route and the locations visited.
